TULSA, Okla. (WKRC) — An Oklahoma man was sentenced to five years in prison following a crash that killed his 16-year-old daughter.

Elliott Binney, 41, received the sentence on June 5, 2026, after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the January 11, 2024, incident that resulted in the death of his daughter, Shelby Binney.

According to court documents, Binney was driving a vehicle with several juvenile passengers when he lost control, causing it to roll multiple times. Shelby was and later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.

Authorities reported that witnesses observed the vehicle traveling at a high speed and passing other cars in a no-passing zone prior to the crash. An open bottle of vodka was discovered near the wreckage, and Binney admitted to consuming alcohol while driving.

Following the accident, Binney fled the scene on foot, but was apprehended approximately 40 miles away in Checotah. Despite the evidence of alcohol consumption, prosecutors indicated there was insufficient proof of legal impairment at the time of the crash.

In addition to imprisonment, Binney was also sentenced to five years of probation. He pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, transporting an open container, and two counts of child neglect.

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler noted that Binney's actions following the crash played a significant role in the sentencing decision.
