B-52 Bomber Crash Claims Eight Lives at Edwards Air Force Base

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CA (AP) — A B-52 bomber crashed shortly after takeoff at Edwards Air Force Base on Monday at approximately 11:20 a.m., resulting in eight fatalities, military officials confirmed.

According to authorities, the aircraft was engaged in a routine test mission when it crashed. Aerial footage revealed extensive debris and black smoke in a charred area of the desert near the runway. Emergency vehicles responded to the scene.

James Hayes, Deputy Commander at Edwards Air Force Base, stated, “We lost eight great Americans,” during a news conference. An interim safety board has been established to initiate fact-gathering efforts leading to a formal investigation, which may take up to six months.

The B-52 Stratofortress, a long-range bomber used by the U.S. military since 1955, is designed for both conventional and nuclear operations. The base, situated approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles, is pivotal for the U.S. Air Force’s aircraft testing and development.

As the airfield is currently closed, all inbound flights have been diverted. Non-commercial visitor access to the base has been suspended as emergency crews work to account for all personnel.

The cause of the crash remains undetermined. Observers noted the aircraft’s rapid descent shortly after taking off, suggesting possible control malfunctions. Further analysis is required to understand the factors that contributed to this tragic incident.
