WASHINGTON (7News) — A two-vehicle crash near the White House early Saturday resulted in one fatality and the arrest of a suspect who fled the scene, according to the United States Park Police.
The incident took place around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, police reported.
Authorities stated the driver of the suspected vehicle fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers. Afterward, the suspect was transferred to U.S. Park Police custody.
The driver of the second vehicle sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to a local hospital. However, a passenger in that vehicle was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The body was subsequently transported by the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The U.S. Park Police Traffic Safety Unit is overseeing the initial investigation and crash reconstruction. After consulting with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Park Police has assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation and related arrest.
The suspect remains in custody, with charges being coordinated with the U.S. Attorney's Office, according to authorities.
The investigation has led to temporary road closures, which have since been lifted, and all affected roadways have reopened.
