MADISON, WI (WKOW) — A pedestrian was killed Wednesday in a multi-vehicle crash on East Washington Avenue.
The incident occurred at 11:45 a.m. at the intersection with Paterson Street, near Breese Stevens Field, according to the Madison Police Department.
Authorities reported that a vehicle struck a pedestrian while crossing East Washington Avenue. The vehicle then collided with three to four additional cars before coming to a stop against a tree.
All westbound lanes of East Washington Avenue were closed from Livingston Street to Brearly Street for several hours, reopening at 3:53 p.m.
Madison Police Captain Kipp Hartman stated that speed is believed to be a contributing factor to the crash, noting the significant damage across a large debris field. Investigators are also examining potential drug and alcohol involvement.
In light of the incident, Hartman reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits and cautioned drivers to be vigilant for pedestrians. He emphasized that pedestrians should use designated crosswalks for their safety.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
