A deadly crash at a toll booth occurred on June 1, involving a suspected drunk driver and a toll worker.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to 911 calls about an erratic driver shortly before the crash on Peninsula Drive.

Authorities confirmed that Deanna Harrell, 35, was allegedly intoxicated when her pickup truck struck toll booth worker Tammy Jo “Tiny Joe” Baker, 63, as she entered the booth at 12:38 p.m. Emergency Medical Technicians arrived by 12:39 p.m., but Baker was shortly after.

Witnesses described Harrell's driving prior to the crash, noting near misses with vehicles and objects. Sheriff Mike Chitwood indicated that Harrell had been drinking earlier that day.

Body camera footage shows first responders aiding Baker immediately after the incident, while authorities later found Harrell stuck in the sand south of the crash site. Harrell was taken into custody and showed signs of intoxication.

On June 2, the sheriff's office announced Harrell had been charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter in connection with Baker's death. Chitwood stated that the investigation will continue until all facts are gathered.

Family members are mourning Baker, who was known for her positive spirit and dedication to her family. Local leaders are urging drivers to be more cautious in the beachside area.

“Slow down. You have to know this is a driving beach,” urged Daytona Beach Shores Mayor Nancy Miller.
