KALAUPAPA, Hawaii (Island News) – A small plane crashed into the water near Kalaupapa Monday around 11:43 a.m.

The Maui Police Department (MPD) reported the U.S. Coast Guard alerted them of the incident occurring approximately two miles west of Kalaupapa. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft lost control and became inverted in the water due to gusty wind conditions.

Two occupants were aboard the single-engine plane. Their injuries remain unspecified; however, both were transported to Moloka'i General Hospital for further evaluation. Witnesses indicated that the pair managed to reach the shore independently before seeking assistance at the National Park facilities at Kalaupapa lookout.

Maui Fire Department crews, aboard MPD's helicopter Hekili, responded to the scene. The FAA has confirmed that the passengers sustained minor injuries.
