INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) — Two drivers crashed during the Indianapolis 500 on May 28, 2023, on lap 18, following turn two.

According to authorities, Ryan Hunter-Reay lost control of his vehicle, spinning out and colliding with Katherine Legge, who subsequently hit the wall. Both drivers exited their cars without assistance.

Witnesses reported that Hunter-Reay experienced handling issues leading up to the crash. Legge was aiming to complete “The Double” by participating in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600.

Emergency personnel from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway responded to the scene, and the incident prompted temporary lane closures for cleanup. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing by race officials. Both drivers expressed disappointment but acknowledged their teams' efforts in preparation for the race.
