ELKO COUNTY, Utah — First responders utilized an iPhone notification to swiftly address a plane crash in Elko County on Sunday morning.
According to the Elko County Sheriff's Office, the Elko County Regional Dispatch Center received an iPhone alert at approximately 10:30 a.m. indicating a crash in the East Humboldt Mountain Range, a remote region with limited access.
Units from the Elko County Sheriff's Office, Clover Valley Fire Department, and MedEx were dispatched to the GPS location. En route, they learned the only occupant, the pilot, had survived the crash with minor injuries.
The aircraft reportedly struck the mountain at an elevation of around 10,200 feet, above the snow line. Due to dense cloud cover and adverse weather conditions, air rescue operations were halted until the following morning, prompting teams to proceed on foot.
By 2:30 p.m., improved weather conditions permitted a helicopter to assist. Ground crews successfully airlifted the pilot to a hospital for further evaluation.
