Three dead in Florida Turnpike accident caused by truck driver

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — A semi-truck driver facing charges for a deadly collision on Florida’s Turnpike is being held without bond after extradition from California.

Harjinder Singh, 28, appeared before a judge Saturday morning. The undocumented immigrant was ordered to remain in custody without bond and initially did not respond to the judge’s inquiries, including questions about legal representation.

An interpreter facilitated communication, resulting in Singh’s agreement to have a public defender appointed to his case. He may opt for private counsel later.

Authorities reported that Singh allegedly made an illegal U-turn on the Turnpike in Fort Pierce on Aug. 12, resulting in a crash that claimed three lives and closed the northbound lanes for several hours.

After fleeing to Sacramento, California, Singh was arrested and returned to Florida to face charges. He is charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter.

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Singh was driving recklessly and disregarded the safety of others at the time of the collision.

This incident remains under investigation. Further updates will be provided.
