MAHOMET — An Urbana man, 29-year-old Lyle Owens, died in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Route 47, just north of Mahomet, Thursday night.
According to the Champaign County Coroner's Office, Owens succumbed to his injuries at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana around 8:10 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
Illinois State Police reported that the crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Route 47, near East Oak Valley Road. Owens was driving southbound when he crossed the center line and collided with a northbound semi-truck. Both vehicles ended up in opposite ditches.
The driver of the semi-truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.
The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police. Further details will follow as they become available.
