VASSALBORO, ME — A 52-year-old man died in an all-terrain vehicle accident at his home Friday night, according to the Maine Warden Service.
The incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. when Cobey Schmidt was operating his side-by-side ATV and struck a rock in his yard, partially ejecting him. The vehicle then rolled over him, officials said.
A passing driver spotted Schmidt trapped under the ATV and called 911. Emergency responders, including Maine State Police, arrived and lifted the vehicle off Schmidt; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are conducting an ongoing investigation, noting preliminary findings suggest speed may have contributed to the accident.
