24-Year-Old Dies and Passenger Critically Injured in Lihu'e Single-Vehicle Crash.

LIHU'E, Hawaii (Island News) – One person died early Saturday morning in a crash on Kaumuali'i Hwy near Kalepa St.

Emergency responders arrived at approximately 3:10 a.m. to find a 2003 Wrangler that had struck a cement curb and collided with two traffic signal poles before overturning.

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Caden Garon of Kauai, sustained fatal injuries and was at the scene. The passenger was in critical condition and transported to The Queen's Medical Center; he had also been from the vehicle.

Authorities closed the intersection of Kaumuali'i Hwy and Kalepa St. for about two and a half hours for investigation. Preliminary indications suggest speed may be a contributing factor, with toxicology results pending to ascertain impairment levels.

This incident marks Kauai's fourth traffic fatality of 2026.
