Wellesley, MA— A single-vehicle crash resulted in a fatality on Washington Street near Crescent Street on October 1 at approximately 11:18 a.m.
According to Wellesley Police, the road was closed between Walnut Street and Glen Road for an extended period during the investigation. It reopened around 2 p.m.
Police reported that an officer driving west on Washington Street was flagged down by a bystander near a black SUV in the roadway. The driver, a male, was found unconscious and unresponsive. He was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital by the Natick Fire Department, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the driver's identity pending family notification.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the SUV was traveling east on Washington Street when it exited the roadway at Orchard Street, later reentering and stopping near 76 Washington St.
Photos from the scene indicated significant damage to the driver's side of the vehicle, although the cause of the crash remains unclear. Yellow police tape marked the area as investigators conducted their inquiries.
