Chase Elliott's chances for the NASCAR regular-season title diminished after a 38th-place finish in the Aug. 16 Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway.

Elliott, who had consistently finished in the top 20 during the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season until a 26th place at Watkins Glen, was involved in a multi-car crash that marred his race. The No. 9 Chevrolet managed to navigate the initial crash, involving Chase Briscoe, Kyle Busch, and Brad Keselowski, but was later struck by Busch, resulting in a with the wall in turn 4.

According to NASCAR officials, Elliott initially opted to stay out on old tires during Stage 1 to conserve resources but received a penalty for vehicle interference after pitting during the stage break. This penalty placed him behind the crashing vehicles on Lap 198, ultimately leading to his poor finish.

Elliott's recent performances have significantly impacted his ability to secure the regular-season title and gain the accompanying 15 playoff points. Among other drivers affected by the crash, Justin Haley retired to the garage, while Denny Hamlin, Erik Jones, and Cole Custer suffered minor damage but continued racing on the lead lap.

Further investigations into the incident are ongoing, with officials reviewing the sequence of events leading to the crash.
