HILO, Hawaii (Island News) – A fatal collision involving a dirt bike and a sedan occurred at the intersection of West Kawili and Kinoʻole Streets on Wednesday night.
At 10:24 p.m., HAWAIʻI Island Police responded to the incident. Authorities identified the victim as 36-year-old David Wong of Hilo. Investigators reported that Wong was riding a yellow and black Suzuki dirt bike westbound when it collided with a gray 2012 Nissan Versa driven by a 22-year-old Hilo woman, who was making a turn into a parking lot.
Wong was found unresponsive, and despite the efforts of police, fire, and medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
The East Hawaiʻi Traffic Enforcement Unit is conducting the investigation, with speed believed to be a contributing factor. The driver and two passengers of the Nissan were transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
