Dirt bike rider killed in Hilo crash as police identify speed as a contributing factor.

HILO, Hawaii (Island News) – A fatal traffic collision involving a dirt bike and a sedan occurred Wednesday night in Hilo.

According to Hawaii Island Police, the crash happened at approximately 10:24 p.m. at the intersection of West Kawili and Kino'ole Streets. A yellow and black Suzuki dirt bike was traveling west on West Kawili St. when it collided with a gray 2012 Versa sedan, driven by a 22-year-old woman from Hilo, who was turning into a business parking lot.

First responders found the male dirt bike rider unresponsive at the scene. Despite attempts at lifesaving measures, he was at 10:45 p.m. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, and an autopsy has been ordered.

Police stated that speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash. The driver and two passengers in the sedan were transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

This incident marks Hawaii's fifth traffic fatality of 2026, compared to nine at the same time last year.
