BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Transportation officials are urging drivers to exercise caution in work zones as construction season intensifies across Idaho.
According to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), work zone crashes have increased, prompting the observation of National Work Zone Awareness Week from April 20–24. This year's theme, “Safe Actions Save Lives,” aims to highlight the impact of safe driving behaviors on preventing accidents and protecting road workers.
In 2024, Idaho recorded 904 work zone crashes, resulting in nine fatalities and an economic impact of nearly $188 million. To enhance awareness, ITD has launched a weeklong video series featuring real stories from Idaho's work zones, emphasizing the importance of safe driving.
“Idaho drivers know what it means to look out for their neighbors,” said ITD Chief Deputy Dave Kuisti. “The men and women in our work zones are Idahoans too; a few extra seconds of patience on the road can make a significant difference.”
ITD noted that work zones can vary in size and location, appearing on busy urban roads and rural highways. Motorists are advised to plan ahead using Idaho 511, adhere to posted signs, and remain vigilant while driving.
