LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Nevada Department of Transportation will assess safety improvements on Charleston Boulevard after a fatal crash involving a 10-year-old boy last week.

Simeon Young was struck by a 2023 Nissan Murano shortly before 7 p.m. near 28th Street while running across the road outside a designated crosswalk. The driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, authorities said.

The crash occurred in an area without designated crossings between an apartment complex and a shopping center. An NDOT spokesperson stated that a formal safety assessment will be conducted once the crash investigation is finished.

“Once the final crash report is available and we have analyzed the site conditions, NDOT will determine if further infrastructure adjustments are warranted for this specific segment,” the spokesperson said.

Despite the recent incident, some residents continue to cross mid-block, citing convenience. Davont Hickman, a local resident, noted, “It's just a little more simple for me,” while Mahlon Price mentioned he crosses the same location daily.

Residents have reported frequent near misses. Richard Sutherland remarked, “I see kids almost get hit every day.”

Charleston Boulevard serves over 35,000 vehicles daily and has recorded nearly 90 serious injury or fatal crashes from 2019 to 2022, according to the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. The speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

The roadway falls under multiple jurisdictions, with Clark County managing one side and the City of Las Vegas overseeing the other, while the Nevada Department of Transportation maintains State Route 159.

Simeon's grandfather, Tray Riley, expressed hope for safety improvements, stating, “I don't wish this type of pain on any other family.” Residents remain concerned about pedestrian safety following the tragic incident.
