Newport, ME – A New Hampshire man was killed in a collision involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 late Tuesday evening.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., Maine State Police received reports of a Chevrolet Volt stopped in the northbound travel lane of I-95. While responding, law enforcement learned of a crash involving the stopped vehicle and a Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The investigation revealed that the Volt, driven by 33-year-old Juan Guallpa of Lempster, was struck from behind by the tractor-trailer. The impact pushed the Volt into the median, while the tractor-trailer rolled onto its passenger side, coming to rest across the southbound lanes.

Guallpa was at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for evaluation.

Authorities are investigating why Guallpa's was stopped in the travel lane. Following the crash, both northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 were closed, with traffic diverted. The northbound lanes reopened around 3 a.m., while southbound traffic continues to be limited to one lane as crews work to clear the scene.

Cleanup and removal efforts are expected to last approximately eight hours. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Trooper Joshua Staples at 207-973-3700, Ext. 9.
