Newport, NH – Late Tuesday night, a fatal crash occurred on Interstate 95, resulting in one death and lane closures.
According to the Maine State Police, multiple reports of a vehicle stopped in the northbound lane near mile marker 157 were received just before midnight. While responding, troopers learned that the vehicle had been struck by a tractor-trailer.
Juan Guallpa, 33, of Lempster, New Hampshire, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 2013 Chevrolet Volt was hit by a 2021 Freightliner. Both vehicles then entered the median, causing the truck to roll onto its passenger side, blocking both southbound lanes.
The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Authorities have not yet determined why Guallpa's vehicle was stopped. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Trooper Joshua Staples at 207-973-3700, extension 9.
Following the incident, lanes on both sides of I-95 were closed. The northbound lanes reopened at 3 a.m., but southbound traffic remains reduced to one lane as cleanup continues. Motorists should expect delays in the area.
