Former UMPI basketball star and prison rehabilitation success story passes away.

Connecticut Accident Claims Life of Former UMPI Basketball Player

Connecticut officials reported the death of Shyquinn Dix, a former basketball standout at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, in a accident on Saturday.

Details of the incident remain limited, with authorities stating the accident occurred over the weekend. Dix was in his early 30s. Confirmed details about injuries and the exact location are pending.

Dix played for the Owls from 2018 to 2020, earning All-North Atlantic Conference honors and averaging 17 points and 6 rebounds per game. He continued his basketball career at Bryant & Stratton College in Buffalo, New York, where he was the second-leading scorer.

In 2019, Dix gained national attention when his story was featured on CBS's 60 Minutes, highlighting his rehabilitation through the T.R.U.E. (Truthful, Respectful, Understanding, Elevating) program at Cheshire Correctional Institution. The program aims to reduce recidivism through intensive counseling and self-improvement activities.

Dix was serving a four-year sentence for felony check fraud but had his term reduced through the program. He was recruited by UMPI after a corrections officer recognized his basketball talent and facilitated communication with coaches.

UMPI Head Coach Dan Kane praised Dix's charisma and resilience, stating he was a key player in the program's growth, leading to the school's first NAC playoff victory in 2020. Dix, a social work major and father of three, was known for his positive impact on those around him.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
