TORONTO (TNND) — A flight attendant from Air Canada is hospitalized after being ejected from a plane during a runway collision at New York's LaGuardia Airport on March 22.
Solange Tremblay, a crew member on Jazz Aviation Flight 8646, was found strapped into her seat over 320 feet from the wreckage. According to her daughter, Sarah Lepine, Tremblay is facing severe injuries, including two shattered legs requiring multiple surgeries and a fractured spine.
As of Monday, over $185,000 has been raised for her medical expenses through a GoFundMe campaign. Lepine highlighted concerns over infection risks and emphasized her mother's long recovery journey, which includes rehabilitation to regain her ability to walk.
The crash involved a Jet striking a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle while responding to an unrelated United Airlines flight. Both pilots were killed in the incident, marking LaGuardia Airport's first fatal accident in 34 years, as reported by Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash, with initial findings indicating the ASDE-X runway warning system failed due to the fire truck lacking a transponder. Investigators are examining why the truck was on the runway and the response of air traffic controllers.
Following the crash, Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau announced his retirement amid criticism over his English-only condolence message. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed disappointment, citing a lack of compassion and judgment.
