Flight attendant injured in deadly LaGuardia crash, thrown 320 feet, faces lengthy recovery.

TORONTO (TNND) — A serious incident occurred on March 22 when an Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck on Runway 4 at New York's LaGuardia Airport, resulting in the deaths of both pilots.

Authorities confirmed that the crash happened while the jet was approaching for landing, with the fire truck responding to a separate emergency. Investigators are currently examining the actions of air traffic controllers and the circumstances that led to the truck being on the runway.

The flight involved was Jazz Aviation Flight 8646. Solange Tremblay, an Air Canada flight attendant, was over 320 feet from the wreckage and is now with severe injuries, including two shattered legs and a fractured spine. Her daughter reported the ongoing medical challenges Tremblay faces, which require multiple surgeries.

As of Monday, more than $185,000 has been raised to assist with Tremblay's recovery efforts through a GoFundMe campaign. Witnesses noted her concern regarding the risk of infection complicating her injuries during recovery.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated that preliminary findings indicate multiple failures led to the collision. Specific focus is on the ASDE-X runway warning system, which reportedly malfunctioned as the fire truck lacked a transponder.

Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia noted that this is the first fatal incident at the airport in 34 years, emphasizing the significance of the investigation into safety protocols.

In response to criticism over a unilingual condolence message, Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau announced his upcoming retirement. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed disappointment over Rousseau's handling of the situation.
