HAMPTON, Va. (TNND) — A 1-year-old child died following a crash involving a 14-year-old driver under the influence in Hampton.
According to Virginia State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Monday along Interstate 64. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road, struck a guardrail, and collided with a barrier.
The child was not properly restrained at the time of the crash, sustaining serious injuries that led to their death on Thursday. The 14-year-old, identified as the child's mother by family members, also suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital; her current condition is unknown.
Authorities confirmed the teen was under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt. She faces charges of driving under the influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation, with additional charges anticipated.
Family members noted the child was scheduled to turn 2 on April 4. The child's grandmother expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “This is the hardest.”
