Eighty-one-year-old Nebraska man dies in rollover crash near Callaway, authorities report.

An 81-year-old man was Wednesday evening following a crash west of Callaway.

At approximately 6:44 p.m. on February 25, 2026, Custer County Communications received an Automated Crash Detection Alert and dispatched deputies to Rye Valley Road. Upon arrival, deputies found a single vehicle involved in a rollover incident.

The driver, identified as Marland J. Peterson, 81, of Callaway, was declared deceased at the scene. Investigators reported that the vehicle was traveling southbound when it failed to navigate a curve, entered the west ditch, overturned, and the driver. Authorities confirmed that Peterson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Custer County Sheriff's Office expressed condolences to Peterson's family. The investigation is ongoing.
