ST. GEORGE, Utah (KUTV) — A school bus driver was cited Tuesday after allegedly using their phone to record a crash scene while driving.
According to the St. George Police Department, the video was shared on social media and led to an investigation. Authorities said the driver was contacted and cited for violating Utah code.
The police department emphasized the dangers of recording at an active crash scene, which includes potential risks to passengers, first responders, and other motorists. “Recording while driving through that environment puts passengers, responders, and other drivers at risk,” officials stated.
The police offered guidance for motorists who encounter a crash: keep hands on the wheel, slow down, move over when safe, and refrain from filming.
Utah law permits limited phone use while driving for specific purposes, including:
- Talking on the phone
- Navigation
- Medical emergencies
- Reporting safety hazards or crimes
- Hands-free or voice-operated use
- Actions by law enforcement or emergency personnel
The incident underscores the importance of attentiveness and safety protocols in responding to crash scenes.
