Investigation Continues in 2017 Millis Crash Involving Police Officer

MILLIS, Mass. — On June 2017, a crash involving an officer and a civilian on Route 109 has reopened questions about the investigation and accountability.

Gary Kaufman, 60, died in the crash when his black pickup truck was struck by Officer Craig Thompson's cruiser, who was allegedly pursuing a motorcycle. The incident occurred approximately half a mile from Kaufman's home. Thompson sustained minor injuries.

According to records, Thompson was driving at speeds up to 85 miles per hour during the pursuit, which he initiated without notifying dispatch. A police report cites Kaufman for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and indicates he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Witnesses reported a critical bystander saw the crash but was not interviewed by investigators. Thompson was ultimately suspended for violating pursuit protocol.

Karli Nee, Kaufman's daughter, has been actively seeking answers. She asserts uncertainties remain regarding the crash and the adequacy of the investigation, which included a lack of thorough evidence gathering and follow-up.

The Millis Police Department, which led the investigation, declined to comment. The Massachusetts State Police extended condolences to Kaufman's family and confirmed their involvement in supporting the investigation.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office has not made comments regarding potential criminal charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.
