A Learjet 60 crashed Sunday afternoon near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in Greenacres, killing nine aboard and prompting evacuations.
The jet had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Authorities said no injuries were reported on the ground. The crash left a crater in the roadway and scattered debris nearby.
About 600 residents from a nearby mobile home community were evacuated to the Greenacres Community Center, officials said. John I. Leonard High School near the scene was closed Monday as emergency crews continued work.
Military Trail is closed between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North; officials said the closure could last for weeks, and drivers should use alternate routes.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation with assistance from the FAA. The cause has not been determined. The NTSB was expected to provide an update at 1 p.m. Monday in West Palm Beach.
Authorities had not publicly identified the nine people who died as of Monday morning.
