Learjet Crash Leaves Nine Dead in Greenacres, Sparking Emergency Response
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A Learjet 60 crashed near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North on Sunday, resulting in the death of all nine individuals on board and causing the evacuation of approximately 600 residents from a nearby mobile home community.
The jet, which had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when the incident occurred, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration. The crash created a significant crater in the roadway and scattered debris in the vicinity. Fortunately, no injuries to ground residents have been reported.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with assistance from the FAA. As of Monday morning, the cause of the crash remains undetermined, and the NTSB is expected to provide an update at 1 p.m. in West Palm Beach.
In response to the crash, evacuees have been relocated to the Greenacres Community Center. Nearby John I. Leonard High School was closed for the day as emergency crews continued their operations. Military Trail is currently closed between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, with officials indicating that the closure could last for weeks as investigations continue.
Local businesses, including Señor Lechón, have also reported disruptions due to the incident. A memorial Mass for the victims is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach.
