Washburn basketball coach Brett Ballard hospitalized after serious car accident.

Brett Ballard, 46, head men's basketball coach at Washburn University, was seriously injured in a crash on the Kansas Turnpike at 8:17 p.m. on Aug. 4.

The accident occurred six miles northeast of the South Topeka exit when Ballard, driving a 2024 F-150 pickup truck westbound on I-70, left the roadway and struck a delineator post, the embankment, and then a bridge pillar, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Ballard was taken to Stormont Vail Health. Further details regarding his injuries have not been disclosed.

Ballard was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.

In a statement, Washburn University President JuliAnn Mazachek expressed sorrow over the incident. “We are deeply saddened to share that Coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured in a accident last evening,” she said. “Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men's basketball program, and all who are affected during this difficult time.”

The university also emphasized the need for privacy for Ballard and his family, promising to provide updates as they become available.
