Fatal Crash on Honoapiilani Highway Claims Life of 18-Year-Old
LAHAINA, MAUI — An 18-year-old man died in a crash on Honoapiilani Highway early Wednesday morning, identified as Manuel Olivas of Lahaina.
According to the Maui Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 1:33 a.m. Olivas was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado southbound when he reportedly lost control at high speed.
The vehicle veered off the roadway, descended an embankment, and struck a tree on the driver's side. Olivas, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said that speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
The investigation is ongoing.
