A wrong-way crash involving two tractor-trailers on Interstate 40 left one driver dead late Wednesday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Authorities reported the incident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on September 23, when a 26-year-old driving a Honda Civic traveled east in the westbound lanes.
Two commercial vehicles were headed west, with one in the left lane and another in the right lane. According to the Highway Patrol, the driver of the left-lane truck attempted to move onto the shoulder when the Honda collided head-on.
The second truck swerved to avoid the collision and ran off the road, with the Honda subsequently striking its side before coming to a stop in the middle of the interstate.
I-40 West was closed for several hours between Magnolia and Rose Hill for investigation and cleanup.
Officials stated no charges will be filed, as the driver responsible for the crash was pronounced dead at the scene.
