SHANKSVILLE, Pa. — Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, marked 25 years since United Flight 93 crashed in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County.
At 10:03 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, the plane crashed into a field outside Shanksville after passengers and crew resisted four al-Qaeda hijackers, authorities said.
All 44 people on board — 33 passengers, seven crew members and four hijackers — were killed, according to officials.
Authorities have said the hijackers intended to strike a federal building in Washington, D.C.
Multiple agencies responded in 2001 to secure the scene and investigate. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army provided aid to families and responders, according to the organizations.
Patti Anewalt, a Red Cross disaster mental health volunteer, said she arrived the afternoon of Sept. 12, 2001, and served for two weeks supporting families and workers.
Anewalt said families were bused to the crash site during the response, while some declined to visit.
Commemorations continue as the nation marks the 25th anniversary; no new investigative actions were announced.
