At least 25 people, primarily teenagers, died in a bus crash on Fogo Island, Cape Verde, on Saturday. The accident occurred on the Campanas de Cima route, a mountainous area of the island. Several others sustained injuries.
The president of Cape Verde, José Maria Pereira Neves, described the incident as “a great catastrophe” in a statement on social media.
Local health authorities reported that, due to their condition, seven bodies were buried immediately. The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed by authorities.
Officials, including the president, are expected to visit the island on Sunday to address the situation.
