DENVER — A Waymo vehicle was involved in a crash in Denver on August 30, marking the company's first incident in the city.
According to Denver Police, the crash occurred during a secondary incident when one vehicle rear-ended another, which then struck the Waymo. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Waymo stated that its vehicle was stopped to yield to a pedestrian at the time of the incident. “We fully cooperated with police,” a company representative said.
Waymo safety data indicates that its vehicles are involved in fewer crashes than those driven by humans, with fewer injuries reported in Waymo-related incidents.
Authorities advise that if passengers or bystanders are involved in a crash with a Waymo, they should call police and remain at the scene until an officer arrives. Waymo vehicles are designed to detect collisions and alert support staff, potentially moving only when safe.
The company provides medical coverage for all riders, regardless of fault. A QR code on the vehicles' doors directs individuals to a collision form and an insurance card.
When law enforcement arrives, they can utilize internal screens in the Waymo to contact a 24/7 support team. The vehicles are also equipped to recognize emergency vehicles and sirens.
