AURORA, Colo. — A fiery crash occurred early Saturday morning after a driver ran a red light at East Hampden Avenue and South Fairplay Street.

The incident took place just before 3 a.m., according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department. A 28-year-old man, identified as Mikael Gafi, was driving a 2015 silver X1 north on Fairplay and failed to stop at the red light while making a right turn onto East Hampden.

Authorities reported that Gafi's vehicle collided with a 2015 blue Subaru Legacy, driven by a 25-year-old Denver resident, which had a green light and the right of way. The impact caused the Subaru to catch fire; however, both drivers managed to exit their vehicles without serious injuries.

Gafi received a summons for driving without valid registration, lack of insurance, and failing to obey a traffic control device, police stated. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and no further details about lane closures or emergency response measures were provided.
