CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WJAR) — A fiery crash on Interstate 295 left two people dead around 3:30 p.m. Friday, affecting northbound traffic for hours.
The collision occurred near the Mendon Road overpass. Witnesses reported a car traveling south crossed the median and collided head-on with a pickup truck in the northbound lanes, causing traffic delays across the region.
The Rhode Island State Police confirmed that one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim sustained serious injuries and later died at Rhode Island Hospital. Their identities have not yet been released.
Emergency crews closed all northbound lanes for several hours to clear debris and investigate. The cause of the crash is under investigation, with authorities stating the southbound vehicle lost control before crossing into oncoming traffic.
The incident prompted a significant response from emergency services, but no additional injuries were reported. Traffic is expected to resume as the investigation continues.
