A tragic accident on U.S. Highway 287 south of Laramie has left one man dead and another hospitalized. The collision, involving a semi-truck, occurred early Monday morning, June 15, around 4 a.m.
Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers responded to reports of a semi-truck that had overturned and caught fire. Upon arrival, they discovered a 2020 Hino commercial vehicle traveling northbound near mile marker 413. The truck crossed into the southbound lane before veering left off the roadway.
The semi struck a guardrail leading to a bridge, with its left tires riding along the guard rail. As a result, half of the vehicle straddled the railing and a piece of the guard rail lodged into the right fuel tank. The truck then rolled off the bridge and onto its roof, partially obstructing the railroad tracks below, before quickly igniting.
The driver, identified as 43-year-old Roberto Gavidia from Centennial, Colorado, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Meanwhile, a passenger managed to escape the wreckage and was transported via ambulance to Ivinson Memorial Hospital, where they received treatment and were later released.
Preliminary investigations suggest driver fatigue played a significant role in the crash. This incident marks the 50th fatality on Wyoming roads in 2026, an increase compared to 46 fatalities in 2025 and 39 in 2024.
