Columbus Police arrested a 32-year-old man on the city's East Side this evening after a crash and armed confrontation with officers.

According to Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Joe Albert, the incident began with a reported traffic crash at the Hamilton Road exit ramp to Interstate 70.

Albert said 911 callers reported a male occupant exited a vehicle, produced two firearms, and fired shots at the crash scene.

Authorities said the suspect, identified as Brandon Burtyk, 32, fled on foot with both guns. Officers later located him in the 4500 block of Errington Road.

Albert said officers issued multiple commands to drop the weapons. Burtyk pointed the firearms at himself, then toward officers, and shots were exchanged.

According to CPD, Burtyk was not struck by gunfire. He had apparent injuries believed related to the crash and was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

Fraternal Order of Police President Officer Brian Steel said one officer was hit and is being treated. CPD said the officer was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Detectives with CPD's Major Case Investigation Team are investigating. Authorities said both firearms were recovered at the scene.

Officials did not immediately release information on lane closures or vehicle tows. Charges include at least one count of felony assault, authorities said.
