MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WBFF) — A fatal crash involving a stolen vehicle driven by juveniles occurred in Germantown on Tuesday, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
Montgomery County Police confirmed that seven children, aged 12 to 15, were inside a stolen sedan when it collided with another vehicle, killing 58-year-old Vance Payne, who was en route to work.
The crash has sparked renewed discussions on youth crime and accountability. Del. Kathy Szeliga, R-Baltimore County, urged state leaders to initiate a public awareness campaign to deter juveniles from engaging in auto theft.
“We need to send a message that such behavior will not be tolerated,” Szeliga stated.
Payne's family issued a statement mourning his loss: “We are focusing on our family right now as we process the tragic and painful loss of a devoted father, husband, and friend to so many. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Incidents involving juveniles and stolen vehicles are not isolated. In June, a 14-year-old driving a stolen car struck and killed a three-year-old in Baltimore. Earlier this year, surveillance footage showed three teens crashing a stolen vehicle into a police officer during an attempted robbery.
Residents expressed concerns about the rising trend of juvenile offenses. One local said, “We need parents to take responsibility for their children's actions and secure their cars.” Another commented on the increasing volatility of youth behavior related to vehicle theft.
Szeliga noted that legislative measures have been softened, contributing to a lack of fear regarding consequences among juvenile offenders.
