Driver Dies After Medical Emergency Leads to DeKalb County Crash

SANDWICH, Ill. — A driver is dead following a medical emergency that caused his vehicle to crash in DeKalb County on Saturday morning.

Just after 9:30 a.m., an SUV and a truck were traveling south on Somonauk Road, near the Chicago Road intersection, approximately 5 miles north of Sandwich. According to authorities, the driver of the SUV experienced a serious medical issue, resulting in the SUV colliding with the rear of the truck. The SUV subsequently veered into a ditch and spun around.

Deputies from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office arrived promptly and administered medical assistance. The driver of the SUV was transported to Northwestern Valley West Hospital, where he was .

The truck's driver, identified as 60-year-old Roger Smith from Plano, reportedly did not sustain any injuries. The name of the deceased SUV driver has not been released, pending notification of family members.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and there are currently no reports of lane closures as a result of the crash.
