PALO ALTO — Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, provided updates about a two-car collision he was involved in July 14 at 6:14 p.m. on Alma Street.
According to authorities, the crash involved Shanahan's black 2023 Tesla Model S and a blue 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, driven by a 21-year-old female. The collision occurred when Shanahan was traveling southbound while the other vehicle was headed north.
Shanahan reported he was not using his phone but dropped it, causing him to take his eyes off the road briefly. He expressed concern over the initial report labeling the other driver as at fault, stating, “I hit her. I don't know why it was reported that way.”
Authorities confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the accident. Shanahan sustained injuries including a concussion, broken nose, ribs, and a broken left hand. He underwent plastic surgery and remained in Stanford Hospital for approximately 8 to 10 hours.
Jeremy Jones, the 49ers' vice president of security operations, indicated the erroneous details stemmed from a clerical error in the California Crash Reporting System, which is being corrected.
While Shanahan experiences lasting effects from his concussion, he is adhering to a limited schedule as the 49ers began training camp. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster is currently managing coaching duties. Shanahan has yet to set a timeline for his full return but remains optimistic about his recovery, stating, “I'm so much better. I know I'm going to be all right.”
