WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — A tragic hit-and-run incident on Monday claimed the life of a 76-year-old man from Illinois. Terry R. Nydegger, a resident of Springfield, Illinois, died when his eastbound pickup truck was struck by an SUV just after 1:29 p.m. on Interstate 90 near Wisconsin Dells, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The collision propelled Nydegger's vehicle across the median into the westbound lanes, where it collided with two semi-trucks. Nydegger was traveling alone in his truck and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. One semi-truck driver sustained minor injuries from the impact.
The driver of the SUV fled the scene in a separate vehicle, prompting investigators to classify the crash as a hit-and-run. To assist with the investigation, all westbound lanes of the interstate were closed for approximately six hours.
Authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident and encourage them to reach out via email to DOTSWRIncident@dot.wi.gov.
