Airport Emergency Exercise Simulates Plane Crash Response, Injuries.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport conducted a full-scale emergency exercise on Tuesday morning to assess the response capabilities of various agencies during a simulated disaster.

The drill, mandated by the FAA to occur every three years, involved a mock plane crash in snowy conditions, with the aircraft positioned upside down. Firefighters responded swiftly, helicopter units landed, and 100 volunteers portrayed injured or deceased passengers to provide a realistic training experience.

“We prepare for everything, and having this training with all the necessary equipment enables our first responders and neighboring personnel to effectively assist our customers,” said SDF Public Safety Officer Jonathan Biven.

Officials emphasized the importance of such training in saving lives, especially in critical situations. They noted a significant investment in aviation safety, having allocated over $2 million for additional firefighting equipment and $150,000 for a new mini ambulance.

This year's exercise also incorporated a mock trauma response area in collaboration with the University of Louisville Hospital, aimed at enhancing preparedness for mass casualty incidents.
