Two Dead Following Police Chase in Clear Creek County Crash
Two people died in a crash on eastbound U.S. 6 on Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.
A 29-year-old man, driving a Chrysler Town and Country minivan, was being pursued by Clear Creek County Sheriff's deputies after evading a traffic stop. The suspect, believed to be involved in multiple vehicle break-ins, fled from U.S. 40 onto U.S. 6, later driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 for about half a mile.
Deputies deployed stop sticks at the eastbound I-70 exit to U.S. 6, puncturing the man's tires. As he continued on deflated tires, he lost control, swerving into westbound lanes and colliding with a Lexus RX350 SUV. The impact sent the Lexus off the roadway, causing it to roll into Clear Creek. The driver of the Lexus was airlifted to a hospital but later died, officials reported.
The Chrysler driver died at the scene. His passenger, a 27-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. The identities of both victims will be released by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.
Additionally, three Jefferson County sheriff's vehicles were involved in a separate crash while en route to assist in the chase, resulting in one deputy being hospitalized with minor injuries.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, authorities stated.
