MERCER COUNTY, Ky. (LEX NEWS) — A fatal boat collision on Herrington Lake claimed the life of a 25-year-old man on July 4.

Authorities confirmed that Nazar Svintozelskiy was struck by a wake boat while his pontoon remained idle. His body was recovered nearly 200 feet underwater, according to the Mercer County Coroner.

Witnesses reported that emergency dispatch received calls indicating a man was severely injured. Dispatchers coordinated a multi-county response, with Kentucky State Police Fish and Wildlife initially noting an unaccounted individual.

On the night of the incident, two Fish and Wildlife boats were already on patrol, one addressing a separate boating under the influence arrest when the collision occurred. No charges have been filed as the investigation remains ongoing.

Records obtained from Fish and Wildlife indicate six alcohol-related incidents and three cases of reckless operation on the lake over the past 2½ years. Officers underscored the importance of adhering to boating regulations, including proper vessel operation and life jacket requirements for children under 12.

Authorities are emphasizing shared responsibility for water safety, urging boaters to report unsafe behavior. The investigation into the incident continues.
