NORTH STONINGTON, CT — A sixth-grade student was struck and killed by a bus Wednesday morning on Old Colony Road, according to North Stonington Public Schools.
The victim has been identified as 11-year-old Torren O'Grady, a student at North Stonington Elementary School. The incident occurred around 8:27 a.m., near Kingwood Drive and Meadow Park, as the school day was beginning.
Connecticut State Police responded to the scene for a crash involving a bus and a pedestrian. The school district confirmed O'Grady's death in a statement released Wednesday afternoon and is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
“Details are preliminary, and we request that all questions regarding the investigation be directed to the Connecticut State Police,” the district stated.
Counselors and emotional support dogs will be available at North Stonington Elementary School both on Wednesday and in the following days to assist students and staff.
Local leaders and Governor Ned Lamont expressed condolences and support for the community.
“Torren O'Grady's family, friends, classmates, and teachers face an unimaginable loss,” Lamont said. “I ask all drivers to take extra care around school areas as we begin the new school year.”
