17 Dead, 21 Injured in Lisbon Streetcar Crash

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The death toll from the crash of the Elevador da Gloria streetcar rose to 17 on Thursday following two additional fatalities due to injuries sustained in the incident, according to emergency services.

All deceased were adults, as confirmed by Margarida Castro Martins, head of Lisbon's Civil Protection Agency, who withheld their identities pending family notifications. A total of 21 others were injured, including individuals aged 24 to 65 and a 3-year-old child. The injured parties included Portuguese nationals and visitors from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Morocco, South Korea, and Cape Verde.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Wednesday as the streetcar, a popular tourist attraction, derailed and crashed into a building. Witnesses described hearing a “horrendous crash” as the vehicle overturned. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, extricating all victims within two hours.

The Elevador da Gloria, operational since 1885, connects Restauradores Square and Bairro Alto, a notable nightlife district. Following the crash, authorities halted operations of three other funiculars for immediate safety inspections.

No details regarding the cause of the derailment were confirmed, but investigations by Portugal's judicial police are ongoing. The city has declared a national day of mourning, and Lisbon's Mayor Carlos Moedas referred to the event as a tragedy that has deeply affected the nation.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the victims' families, reflecting widespread grief across the country.
