- The dirt bike was reportedly carrying two 11-year-olds and failed to stop at a stop sign.
- The pickup truck driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment.
BERKELEY — An 11-year-old girl died from injuries sustained in a crash on Wednesday, Aug. 26, involving an electric dirt bike and a pickup truck, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
Emergency responders arrived at the intersection of Moorage and Sherman avenues around 12:45 p.m., following reports of a serious accident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the electric dirt bike, carrying two 11-year-olds, was traveling northbound on Sherman Avenue when it failed to stop at a posted stop sign. The dirt bike entered the path of a westbound Ford F-250 pickup truck, striking the driver's side door, according to a statement from the Prosecutor's Office.
The male operator of the dirt bike was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, treated for minor injuries, and subsequently released.
The female passenger was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River but succumbed to her injuries; her identity has not been disclosed.
The Ford F-250 driver remained on-site and was confirmed to have a valid driver's license with no signs of impairment, authorities said.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, along with the Berkeley Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigations Division, is actively investigating the incident.
