WICHITA, KS – Oct. 21, 2026, 10:28 a.m. CT — A vehicle crash at the Stryker Sports Complex on Oct. 17 resulted in two fatalities and ten injuries, prompting local authorities to launch a thorough investigation.
Witnesses reported a truck driven by a 34-year-old woman crashed onto the youth soccer field, killing 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. The driver was accompanied by two of her children at the time of the incident.
According to the Wichita Police Department, the driver cooperated with investigators and was released pending toxicology results. Authorities stated they did not have probable cause to arrest her initially, based on information available by the morning of Oct. 18.
The incident has drawn scrutiny online due to the driver's release, but police emphasized this does not indicate a final determination about potential charges. “We recognize that the decision made may not be popular,” said Police Chief Joe Sullivan, underscoring the department's commitment to the law and Constitution.
Authorities confirmed that nearly 50 witnesses have been interviewed, with ongoing inquiries into the vehicle's data and an analysis by the Regional Forensic Science Center. The Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office stated that no timeline for a charging decision is established, as it hinges on the completion of all investigative materials.
The driver, a resident of Garden City, Kansas, has no recorded criminal history or outstanding warrants, and police dismissed rumors regarding her immigration status or ties to law enforcement.
